This isn’t something guys think about – concealed carry while carrying a baby. It doesn’t have to be an either or choice. There are some things to think about and precautions to take when you mix guns and especially young kids.
I came across an excellent video on the subject. She discuss several issues and steps to take when carrying both a gun and a baby. Here is a short summary:
- First of all, safety comes first – the safety of your children, your family and yourself. You are going to have to balance the availability of the weapon to you and the children.
- Arm up (put your gun on) in a different area. Don’t mess with the gun and the child at the same time.
- Make sure the trigger guard is completely protected by the holster. You never know where small fingers might go, especially when you have a struggling, screaming toddler in your arms.
- Carry a child on the opposite hip of your weapon if possible.
- Sling carriers are great for handling both the child and the weapon.
She demos some good ways to manage the weapon and the child at the same time. I would suggest that you go out to the range and practice (WITHOUT the baby) to develop the muscle memory to be smooth when you need to be.
