Teaching Kids Gun Safety

Teaching kids gun safety can be one of the greatest things you do for them. First of all, it keeps them safe and teaches a healthy respect for guns. Also it can be a great way for a family to spend time together and grow closer together.  Finally it sure beats them sitting in front of the TV.

I found a great video over on YouTube that walks you through what you should teach your kids. Here is a short summary, but I really advise you to watch the video:

  • First teach them the Four Rules of Gun Safety and that weapons are always loaded. Keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction.
  • They should never put finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
  • Teach your kids how to unload a gun.
  • On the range, they should know never to cross in front of the shooting line until there is a cease fire.
  • Use encouragement and patience, look to see when they get tired.
  • Remember your first priority should be to teach safety first, everything else second.
