Choosing the Right Ammo

This is a guest post by Andrew Bettschoosing the right ammo

The AR-15 family of rifles is a fantastic weapon system for home defense. It is lightweight (before you add a scope, bipod, rails, vertical foregrip, laser, fuzzy dice, and curb feelers), the ergonomics are very well thought out and easy to learn, it is reliable, low recoil, and it is powerful. It can carry more than enough ammunition to get you through a fight, which is important in a home defense gun because most of us don’t sleep in load bearing equipment.

With the right ammunition, it can be very effective for defense, without presenting excessive risk to people down range. With the wrong ammo, though, it can penetrate too shallowly to reliably incapacitate. 50 gr and lighter bullets are mostly designed for turning small mammals inside out or for coming apart so quickly as to not produce an exit wound and ruin a pelt on an animal the size of a coyote or similar.

They are NOT designed for defense against humans or similarly sized animals and should not be used for that purpose.
