Practicing gun safety needs to be way of life if you are going to have a gun in your household.

Jeff Cooper’s 4 rules of gun safety provide a simple, concise list of things to think about:

  • All guns are always loaded.
  • Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
  • Be sure of your target, what is in line with it, and what is beyond it.

The video below provides a great discussion of them. I especially like the idea that these rules need to be practiced just like you practice marksmanship. You can’t take them for granted and get into a routine. In the army we would repeat the rules before each range session.
